When a substrate is subject to heat and rapid, extreme temperature changes, it can lead to paint and metal deterioration, mill scale, breakage, coating failure and corrosion. Electrical and engine components, metal chimneys and ovens, pipework and chemical plants, all these are exposed to possibly damaging temperatures and conditions. A high heat paint (or high temperature paint) works to protect the substrate from elevated and extremes of temperature without losing functionality. High heat paints are commonly used for vehicles, but they have applications beyond engine-based ones in industry and CUI prevention. As well as protecting from heat, high heat paint:
• Reduces thermal fatigue: improve performance of machinery and extend part life
• Allows for higher operating temperatures while limiting thermal exposure
• Effective temperature Different formulations provide resistance to heat from 0-500°F and from 500°F to 1200 & 1400°F)
• Abrasion resistant: Suitable for harsh environments
• Protects from corrosion under insulation (CUI): Provides an extra layer of protection between the hot surface and insulation
In this article we look at the different categories of high heat paint, how to choose the right one for your project, and where to find high temperature paint products and contractors in Canada.

It is important to note that while high heat paint does provide some protection from flames, it is not a fire resistant paint. Essentially, high temp paint can be divided into four types:
1. Epoxy-based, silicone-based, multi-polymeric paints – Single or two component, water- or solvent-based, high temp epoxy paint is formulated to provide resistance to high temperatures when applied at new construction, on-site and as a maintenance coating. Higher silicone content usually means the higher the temperature resistance. Liquid paints can be applied to hot substrates without affecting the coating but you must specify this application to get the correct coating recommendation.
2. High temp ceramic coating – The heat resistance properties of high heat ceramic paint are well known, and some of the highest heat paints available are ceramics. They also provide corrosion protection and chemical resistance and a hard, durable finish.
HOW TO CHOOSE A HIGH HEAT PAINT FOR YOUR PROJECT
As with any coating application, understanding the needs of your substrate and the application process is crucial for making the right coating choice. As well as knowing the substrate type, you need to know its environment, its use, the coating time parameters, and the likely ways it will fail. Here are some questions you need to ask before you can choose a high heat coating:
• Maximum temperature of the substrate:
One of the most common reasons for failure is expecting these coatings to perform outside of the temperature range they were manufactured to tolerate. Each coating type has a specific temperature range, and outside it the functionality and efficacy fails. Make sure not to understate the maximum temperature.
• Insulation of the substrate:
If you are choosing a coating to combat CUI, that coating needs to be specially formulated for the purpose. It needs corrosion resistance, but it also needs to be able to be applied to hot substrates and deal with boiling water exposure.
• Substrate temperature during application:
There are high heat paints formulated for hot up to 500F and from 500F-1200F and room temperature application. A hot application may be required to avoid downtime, spot coating problem areas, and generally not disrupting a facility.
HIGH TEMPERATURE PAINT FOR METAL COMBATS CUI
Insulating metal structures is very common in industrial environments; it can minimize heat gain or heat loss, reduces costs, improves efficiency, and increases staff safety. The problem starts when water penetrates the insulation, collecting in the space between the insulation and the metal. When this happens it is the perfect environment for corrosion. The trapped moisture has the potential to cause rapid rusting and corrosion on the surface of the steel, below the insulation layer.
CUI is particularly insidious as it can go undetected under insulation until the problem is severe. If it remains undetected, it can lead to shutdown of an entire facility, or even safety incidents. This is why high temperature paint for metal is so important – it can coat the steel or other metal surface and protect it from the hazard of corrosion under insulation.
High heat paint is applicable from heavy industrial machinery to home barbeques grills, cars and their parts, exhausts, mufflers, brake calipers, boat engines, train and locomotive parts, stationary and not stationary metal parts, bbq pits, trailers and smokers.
High temperature resistant paint is used across a wide range of industries, as well as by homeowners, auto restorers and barbecue enthusiasts. High temp paints for professional purposes should be applied by a trained professional. Depending on the resin of a coating will dictate and determine the correct coating recommendation, application. Coatings are designed for all possible heat resistant applications and can also be classified as temperature indicating coatings that will change temperatures to indicate temperature drifts.
For Industrial Use Only and check the local V.O.C. for the United States and Canada for local restrictions in your state/region when purchasing and applying these coatings that can be purchased in multiple sizes (aerosol cans, pints, quarts, gallons and 5 gallon pails) for each intended use.
Shop apply coatings should only be applied in a shop with proper ventilation and proper respiratory masks and equipment.
Auto Refinishing – These coatings are intended to be used to coat automotive parts that are painted either detached from the equipment or then attached to something else. high-temperature coating is among that benefit from a 1 L exemption (the VOC limit can exceed the 420 g/L in this particular case when the coating is sold in a 1 Litre format) but again, this is only for high temperature coating products that are applied on stationary sources and that are not applied in shops (OEM). In any other case, excluding stationary sources as defined in the US and Canadian Architectural rules, the limit of 420 g/L does not apply. But if the high-temperature coatings can be sold at retail and is sold for any type of goods or surfaces, including stationary ones then they do they have to comply with the 420 g/L.
